Smartphones may be greatest reason for trading in mobiles
People trading in standard mobile phones may increasingly be doing so in order to move towards smartphones, if new research is anything to go by.
IDC has released the results of a study that show feature phone shipments in western Europe fell during the second quarter of 2011, as consumers flocked to smartphones.
The data showed that shipments of the latest devices rose by 48 per cent during the three-month period to 21.8 million units.
This is despite the overall mobile phone market actually shrinking by three per cent year on year – perhaps emphasising the popularity of smartphones.
IDC European mobile devices research manager Francisco Jeronimo said: "Android-powered handsets from the likes of Samsung, HTC and Sony Ericsson have been able to drive strong volumes and to grab the biggest slice of share from the declining Symbian."
According to Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, more than four in ten people in the UK now own a smartphone.
