Smartphones Growing In Popularity

Smartphones are proving increasing popular with consumers who are now expecting to use their handsets for more than just calls and texts, it has been suggested.

A report from Strategy Analytics found that global smartphone shipments increased 30 per cent year-over-year during the fourth quarter of 2009.

This was the fastest rate of growth in the market since the third quarter of 2008.

Consumers could wish to consider mobile recycling as an option it they would like to receive cash to put towards a new smartphone.

Jonathan Morris, editor of What Mobile magazine, said: "Smartphones are growing at an incredible rate as they become more affordable and features once reserved for the high-end devices filter down through the market segments."

He added that the iPhone has probably helped to educate consumers that it is now possible to expect much more than simply using a handset to make calls and send text messages.

ABI Research predicts that smartphone shipments across the world will expand by up to 1.2 billion handsets this year.
