Smartphones could be driving mobile recycling

The majority of mobile phone recycling could be carried out by people who are investing in a new smartphone.

Such a suggestion comes after new findings from the NPD Group showed that the share of handsets being sold in the US that are smartphones is continuing to rise.

Indeed, the share of smartphones within the total market hit 59 per cent in the third quarter of 2011 – some 13 per cent higher than it was a year ago.

This is perhaps partly down to the fact smartphone prices are falling, with the period said to be the fourth consecutive quarter that reported a drop.

"[There is] further opportunity for retailers to improve revenue numbers by focusing marketing efforts on selling more accessories," noted Ross Rubin, executive director of industry analysis at the NPD Group.
