Smartphones: Touchscreens Most Popular

Consumers may wish to consider recycling their old mobile phone in order to upgrade to a smartphone with touchscreen, if recent findings are anything to go by.

Research from analysts Canalys found that 55 per cent of the smartphone market in the fourth quarter of last year was for touchscreen devices. This was a 138 per cent year-on-year increase.

The total number of touchscreen smartphones shipped last year was greater than 75 million, with total smartphone shipments hitting 166 million, the analyst said.

It may also be the case that a number of people are still hoping to get their hands on a touchscreen mobile with more than half - 60 per cent - of 4,000 consumers polled stating that they wanted a touchscreen interface on their next handset.

Canalys analyst Tim Shepherd said that Nokia was "the leading vendor by volume of touchscreen smartphones in the final quarter of the year".

The iPhone could be one option for people looking to purchase a touchscreen phone.
