Smartphone competition grows with release of new devices
The latest smartphone sales figures show that the release of flagship devices from firms such as HTC and Samsung have intensified competition in the market.
Data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech found Android retained its number one position in the smart mobile phone market in the UK during the last 12 weeks.
The operating system (OS) had a 50.1 per cent share, which is up from 44.6 per cent 12 months ago.
HTC and Samsung are the two dominant manufacturers using the OS, holding an 86 per cent share between them.
The popularity of smartphones continues to go from strength to strength as figures released last year showed that more than 50 per cent of the population now owns a smart handset.
Commenting on the latest figures, global consumer insight director Dominic Sunnebo added: "We expect to see almost 22 million consumers aged 13+ changing their mobile device in the next year, with almost 80 per cent of these consumers buying a smartphone."
