Smart Mobile Phone Shipments Will Eclipse All Others Combined

Research has suggested that worldwide smart mobile phone shipments will eclipse all other handset units combined by 2016.

Global handset shipments will increase 29 per cent from 1.7 billion in 2012 to 2.2 billion in 2016. The key driver of this growth is set to come from the smartphone segment.

So much so that the smart devices will become larger than the ultra-low and low-cost and feature phones combined.

ABI Research's new report entitled Mobile Device Shipment Market Data predicts smartphone shipments will grow to over one billion by 2016.

The recent IHS iSuppli Display Electronics backs this thought up as the figures released suggested these sales have been as a result of the wide scale success of Apple's iPhones.

"This emerging scenario could become a very dangerous situation for Nokia's handset business as the smartphone and feature phone segments will not be able to support each other in trying times," vice president and practice director of mobile services at ABI Research Kevin Burden commented.
