Silicon shipments indicate tablets may be reason to sell mobile phones
13/07/2011
The rise of tablet devices – such as the Apple iPad 2 – could be responsible for more people selling their mobile phones in order to switch to one of the models.
According to new figures from In-Stat, the amount of silicon due to be shipped in order to make tablets over the coming years is predicted to surge.
It found that the material will be worth $14 billion (£8.8 billion) in the industry by 2015, indicating the newfound prominence of tablets.
"Global sales for tablets are on the rise as a result of continued consumer demand, global expansion of tablets and a wider adoption of these devices beyond early adopters," explained Stephanie Ethier, a senior analyst at In-Stat.
The organisation also concluded that tablet shipments will pass the 110 million units mark within the next two years.
A recent prediction by the International Data Corporation suggested sales of tablets are also set to rise in 2011.
