Shipments Of Phablets Like Samsung Galaxy Note To Double This Year

Shipments of mobile phone-come-tablet devices are expected to double this year, following increased demand and popularity.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 could currently be the dominant gadget in the current phablet market, with a 5.5-inch screen and S-Pen smart stylus.

However, competition is increasing from devices like the Huawei Ascend Mate, which was recently unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2013.

This handset has a mammoth 6.1-inch screen alongside impressive specifications like a 4,050 mAh battery, eight-megapixel camera and quad-core processor.

IHS iSuppli spokesperson Vinita Jakhanwal said: "The move to offer larger-display smartphones reflects the efforts of both device and panel makers to differentiate their products."

As more mobile phone owners utilise apps and tools available on virtual application stores, playing games like Angry Birds and watching television shows on BBC iPlayer, screen size is becoming more important.

Apple even increased the display on its newest sixth-generation handset from 3.5 to four inches, and the iPhone 6 could be even bigger.
