Samsung wins key legal battle over Apple
A British judge has ruled in Samsung's favour in the ongoing legal battle between Apple and the South Korean electronics giant.
The two firms are embroiled in a patent war and Samsung has taken the edge in the UK after High Court judge Colin Birss ruled Samsung's range of Galaxy tablets differed from Apple's iPad.
However, the ruling was not a complete victory for Samsung, as Judge Birss said he had reached the decision on the basis that its tablets "are not as cool" as those made by Apple.
"They do not have the same understated and extreme simplicity which is possessed by the Apple design," he said.
It is the second legal defeat in recent days for Apple, after the High Court ruled HTC had not infringed on four patents Apple claimed it held the rights to.
Despite the disparaging remark Samsung welcomed the ruling, saying "the industry could be harmed and consumer choice unduly limited" if Apple continues to make "excessive legal claims" relating to design.
