Samsung Launches The New Galaxy Alpha

Mobile giant Samsung has announced that it is launching its new smartphone, the Galaxy Alpha.

The device will be Samsung’s first metal-framed smartphone, similar to that of the iPhone, which will surely be a welcomed addition following criticism of the company’s usual plastic-framed phones. However, it is important to note that it is only the frame which is metal, the back of the Galaxy Alpha will still be plastic.

Rob Orr, vice president, IT and Mobile Division at Samsung Electronics UK & Ireland, said of the new release: “Built with the consumer in mind, the Galaxy Alpha focuses on both beauty and functionality.”

The smartphone will run on Android software and has a 4.7-inch HD Super AMOLED display, which is slightly smaller than the Galaxy S5. This might make a difference to consumers when choosing between the two handsets, although the Galaxy Alpha is lighter at 115g, and thinner at 6.7mm thick.

Similar to the Galaxy S5, the device will use a finger scanner and includes a selfie camera, keeping fans of this year’s earlier Samsung model happy. However, there will be disappointment in the fact that at 1,860 mAh battery, the capacity is a third smaller than the Galaxy S5’s 2,800 mAh battery. This may well hinder the Galaxy Alpha, which Samsung are focusing on being a luxury addition to their Galaxy range.

Alongside an advanced camera, the Galaxy Alpha will also have real time HDR, allowing you to take great photos, even in difficult lighting conditions, giving a unique viewing and photo experience.

It is apparent that Samsung is pleased with the new member of the Galaxy family, Mr Orr said: “Combining a stunning metal frame and slim, light weight design with the same powerful hardware and features you’d expect from a flagship Galaxy mobile device, the Galaxy Alpha is perfect for those that want style without compromising on performance.”

The Galaxy Alpha will be available at the beginning of September in Charcoal Black, Dazzling White, Frosted Gold, Sleek Silver, and Scuba Blue. Interestingly enough, the release date coincides with the new iPhone 6, also rumoured to be in stores this September. Going head to head with the iPhone is a brave move for any company, given the sheer popularity of Apple’s products, particularly if Apple continues with the iPhone’s current designs.

Although specifications of the new iPhone 6 have yet to be confirmed, it is rumoured that it will be the largest iPhone yet, with a larger 4.8-inch or 5-inch full HD display panel. There have also been suggestions that it will have water resistant properties which, if true, will be a unique feature that will undoubtedly bring a legion of new fans.

While it must be stressed that these are just rumours, the lead up to the Christmas sales is sure to be an interesting one in the world of smartphones!
