RIM Reportedly Considering Selling BlackBerry

Research In Motion (RIM) is reportedly looking into the possibility of selling its handset business BlackBerry in order to ease the burden on the embattled firm.

Chief executive officer of RIM Thorsten Heins has previously expressed openness to the possibility of "strategic business model alternatives," which some have claimed hints at a sale.

The Sunday Times has since claimed that the hierarchy of the company is considering a proposal from bank advisors that would see it split itself into two.

One company would be composed of RIM's services such as BlackBerry Messaging and BlackBerry Internet Services, while another would be put to auction with Amazon and Facebook supposedly interested in such a bid.

It is looking into alternative possibilities after it was revealed that its Q1 earnings - to be revealed on June 28th - are likely to have an operating loss.

According to the publication, a second plan is being considered that would see them sell a large market share of the company to an organisation such as Microsoft.
