Record Smartphone Sales Driven By Samsung

A record-high 207.7 million smartphones were sold around the world in the fourth quarter of 2012, as consumer demand continues to increase for the modern devices.

Samsung drove the impressive performance, after 64.5 million transactions were made in the three-month period concerning handsets like the Galaxy S3 and Note 2.

Predictably, Apple was close behind in second place after shipping out 43.5 million iPhone gadgets - a year-on-year improvement of 22.6 per cent.

Research analyst at Gartner Anshul Gupta said: "The success of [the manufacturers] is based on the strength of their brands as much as their actual products."

He claims that other smartphone creators are fighting for third position, as they experience difficulties attaining the success of the two domineering forces.

Companies like Nokia and BlackBerry have recently posted losses as they struggled to retain customers, and have taken different tactics in an attempt to regain market share.

The Finnish manufacturer opted to work with Microsoft to develop Windows Phone 8 devices, while the Canadian firm released a new BlackBerry 10 operating system and new premium handsets.
