Patent Adds Weight To Apples Sapphire Rumour

The idea that Apple could include sapphire in its future mobile phones has been the subject of rumours before. However, now a new patent application has added significant weight to the speculation.

Apple has filed a patent that reveals a number of ways that it could use sapphire in its future devices. The patent describes how it could be attached to electronics and also reveals potential applications for the material.

It says that the manufacturer could pour melted plastic or metal through a hole in the sapphire surface, which would bind the two materials together when it cools.

Other rumours had speculated that the Cupertino company could use a sapphire coating to make its devices' screens even tougher and clearer. However, the new application explains how the crystal could be used to take some of the heat out of the smartphone.

Apple is already using sapphire in its devices with the camera lens cover on the iPhone 5 and the fingerprint sensor cover both using the crystal.
