Over 50s Jump On Smartphone Bandwagon

The meteoric rise of smartphones has been highlighted recently as now over 50 per cent of people in the UK own a smart mobile phone.

It appears that the craze for these must-have devices has reached the older generation, as the latest data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech shows that the majority of sales in the last 12 weeks have come been made to over-50s.

Almost 20 million people in this demographic now own mobile phones, with the main reason for purchase seemingly being easy use of the internet and email.

The figures also show that Android has retained its number one operating system position in the latest 12-week period.

It now holds a 50 per cent share, which is up from 42.2 per cent a year ago.

"Our data tends to show that over-50s mobile use replicates what they do at home on their PC. In contrast, under-50s tend to use their phones and computers for different purposes," global consumer insight director Dominic Sunnebo commented.
