Over 50% of GB population now owns a smartphone
Over half of the British population now owns a smartphone, such is the rise in popularity of the mobile phone-type.
According to the latest data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, 50.3 per cent of the population now owns a smartphone, while the devices made up 71.4 per cent of mobile phone sales in the 12 weeks ending January 22nd 2012.
Global consumer insight director of Kantar World Panel ComTech Dominic Sunnebo said for the first time ever people without a smartphone are in the minority as an increasing number of citizens jump "on the bandwagon".
“Android holds on to its lead but Apple is making inroads, increasing its share of the British market from 21.7 per cent a year ago to 29.1 per cent now," Mr Sunnebo continued.
As a result of the increasing popularity of smartphones, research recently compiled by Gartner found that Apple's iPhone is now the most popular mobile phone in the world.
