Nokia Reports Ovi Maps Success

Nokia has reported that the introduction of a free download of its Ovi Maps service has been a success.

Since the launch of the free service on January 21st more than one million people have downloaded the mobile manufacturer's mapping and navigation application.

The success of Ovi Maps is part of Nokia's strategy to lead the market in mobile mapping, location-based services and navigation.

Anssi Vanjoki, executive vice-president of Nokia, said: "This is great news for our third party application developers. Within a matter of days there is an installed base of more than one million active users all potentially hungry for new and innovative location-aware apps."

The top five most popular Nokia handsets for installing the download were Nokia N97 mini, Nokia N97, Nokia 5230, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and Nokia E72.

Nokia has recently revealed that total downloads from application store - the Ovi Store - are more than one million per day.
