People who choose to trade in their mobile phones and upgrade to a BlackBerry model have been offered a brand new instant messaging service.
Research in Motion (RIM) – which produces all of the brand's devices – has confirmed the sixth version of BlackBerry Messenger (BBM6) is now available.
It allows consumers who download BBM6-enabled apps to interact with each other from a single portal.
"BBM6 marks the beginning of an even greater social experience for BlackBerry smartphone users," declared Alistair Mitchell, vice-president of BBM platform and integrated services at RIM.
He went on to note that many developers have expressed an interest in providing BBM6-connected apps and will be showcasing them at the BlackBerry App World exhibition this week.
Rival manufacturer Apple – which offers downloads from its popular App Store – recently revealed that it has now provided users around the world with 15 billion downloads since it came into operation.
