Motorola sets sights on 3D printing
Motorola's dream of manufacturing a modular mobile phone could be closer to becoming a reality.
Project Ara is the name for the company's aim to create a completely customisable handset by producing module smartphones that users can change to alter the look and could upgrade its own parts.
It appears that this ambition could be getting closer as the Google-owned company has announced a partnership with 3D Systems. The latter produces 3D printers, which could help Motorola turn Project Ara into actual handsets.
The pair have signed a multi-year development agreement to create a continuous high-speed 3D printing production platform.
If the project does become a reality, users could add to their current handset rather than having to fork out for a brand new one.
Chief executive at 3D Systems Avi Reichental released a statement to say: "Project Ara was conceived to build a platform that empowers consumers all over the world with customisation for a product made by and for the individual."
