Motorola And Apple Among Best Smartphone Vendors

Motorola and Apple are two of the handset manufacturers which have contributed to increasing worldwide sales of smartphone handsets, it has been revealed.

The Apple iPhone was reported to have almost doubled its shipments last quarter from the same quarter a year ago.

Other manufacturers in the top five converged mobile device vendors were HTC, Nokia and Research In Motion.

IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker found that last year, vendors shipped a total of 174.2 million units, up from the 151.4 million units sold the previous year - a 15.1 per cent increase.

In 2008, 12.7 per cent of all mobile phone sales were smartphones, but the report found that this increased to 15.4 per cent during 2009.

"Four of the top five vendors established new shipment records for a single quarter, indicating strong demand in the market," said Ramon Llamas, senior research analyst with IDC's Mobile Devices Technology and Trends team.

Forty per cent of participants in a recent Nokia survey requested that guides were added to its Ovi Maps service, providing consumers with a local knowledge about the location they were in.
