More People Using Their Mobile To Go Online

Most access to Wi-Fi connections is now coming from handheld mobile devices, research has found.

Fifty-six per cent of connections to outside networks were made by portable internet handsets such as smartphones rather than the more traditional netbooks and laptops, mobile ad-serving platform JiWire revealed.

David Staas, senior vice-president of marketing at JiWire, said: "With the proliferation of mobile devices, more people are accessing the internet outside their homes and offices, whether on a mobile phone, netbook or even a gaming device."

More than 890 million new internet-enabled wireless devices are expected to ship this year alone according to Morgan Stanley, he added, and that move was "revolutionising how people integrate media into their daily lives and changing the nature of advertising".

Consumers could wish to consider recycling an old mobile as a way to receive money to put towards a new handset with internet access.

The increasing use of mobile internet phones could see the number rise further in future.
