Mobiles Usage Continues To Boom

Safe recycling of phones could be essential in the coming years as the number of devices being shipped out grows at a rapid pace.

The total number of computers, tablets and mobiles is expected to increase by 7.6 per cent by the end of 2014.

Based on previous research, analysts at Gartner have predicted that devices will reach 2.5 billion units by the end of the year, with nearly 75 per cent of these being smartphones.

This shows a five per cent increase in demand for handsets but tablets will be the main drivers of growth throughout the year.

Ranjit Atwai, research director at Gartner, said: "The trend is not so much a move away from PCs, but towards lighter, more convenient devices, particularly tablets. With more and more people becoming mobile workers as well, the more popular devices are those that in many ways mimic their lifestyles."

He also added, while Android and Apple continue to grow, BlackBerry could disappear as an operating system, according to Mr Atwai.
