Mobile phones 'helping social networks'
New mobile phones are helping to increase the popularity of social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook, it has been suggested.
A number of consumers are opting to buy smartphones that can access the internet, as they want to be able to keep up-to-date with friends and family while on the move.
Jennifer L Jacobson, director of public relations at Retrevo and social media author, stated new phones are making social media "ultra portable".
She added they are also opening doors into social media for people who may not be able to afford or get regular access to a laptop or desktop computer.
Part of what makes social networking so appealing is the removal of the need to do it while sat at a desk, she suggested.
Research from electronics site Retrevo revealed almost half of social media users check or update their Facebook and Twitter before going to sleep or soon after waking up.
