Mobile phones deemed a necessity - laptops just a luxury
Modern consumers deem having a mobile phone as a necessity, while items like laptops and DVD players are only luxuries.
The gadgets have become a priority purchase, and many people feel lost if they leave their handset behind at home.
"It’s staggering that technology has just become so interwoven in to our everyday lives," managing director of savings for Aldermore - the bank which commissioned the study - Simon Healy said.
Mobile phones are classed as vital belongings, along with items like fridges, kettles and reading glasses, 72Point reports.
The latest gadgets allow customers to perform a wide variety of tasks, so their widening capabilities mean owners increasingly depend on them.
A quarter of respondents to the survey said that they "genuinely couldn't manage without the internet", and a large proportion of people utilise smartphones for web access.
The Apple iPhone also made it on to the luxury list, indicating that many consumers feel they need a handset, but aspire to owning the high-end model.
