Mobile phone sales up by 47% on last year
The number of mobile phones sold around the world added up to 427 million during the third quarter, according to new research.
Gartner said that this figure is up by 47 per cent compared to a year ago, with 169 million smartphones purchased during the period, at a rate of 1.83 million per day.
The organisation revealed that in terms of market share, Samsung holds 22.9 per cent, ahead of Nokia's 19.2 per cent. Apple can lay claim to having 5.5 per cent, with "other devices" taking up 38.2 per cent.
RIM, which manufactures BlackBerry devices, has 2.1 per cent of the market.
Anshul Gupta, principal research analyst at Gartner, said: "After two consecutive quarter of decline in mobile phone sales, demand has improved in both mature and emerging markets as sales increased sequentially. In China, sales of mobile phones grew driven by sales of smartphones, while demand of feature phones remained weak."
