Mobile Phone Ringtones Can Affect Mental Capacity

Researchers at Washington University have claimed that finding solutions and remembering information is much easier if your mobile phone is on silent because ringtones drain your brain power.

The scientists found that students scored up to 25 per cent less on tests following exposure to ringing mobile phones. The worst results were noted upon hearing a song people knew and liked.

Researchers posed as students in the middle of a crowded undergraduate psychology lecture at Louisiana State University and allowed their mobile phones to ring loudly for 30 seconds.

"These seemingly innocuous events are not only a distraction, but they have a real influence on learning," lead author Jill Shelton said of the results.

She added that depending on how familiar people are with the song, it could lead to worse impairment in their cognitive performance.

The results of the three-year study were published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology and were also highlighted in this week's Men's Health.
