Mobile phone recycling: Take simple steps to protect your phone from viruse
People should be looking to take a number of relatively simple steps to protect their mobile phones from rogue apps that could contain viruses.
Chief executive officer at Get Safe Online - a joint venture between the government, law enforcement, businesses and public sector - Tony Neate said fraudsters are creating sophisticated malware.
An investigation by the Information Commissioner's Officer (ICO) found that one in ten second hand phone hard drives may contain residual information.
The organisation also found that 65 per cent of British adults now recycle their mobile phone or hand it to another user.
Mr Neate said malware is nothing new, as many online criminals have tried to compromise computers for years but now fraudsters are targeting mobile phone users.
"For smartphones, there are simple steps you can take to avoid rogue apps and other threats. The only way to protect yourself is to take responsibility for your own security," he added.
