Mobile phone customers with Orange could give more to charity

Consumers could use their mobile phones to offer donations to charity, after Orange announced it is to give a higher percentage of text gifts to organisations.

The network operator will now send 90 per cent of any donations made via text message between the values of 15 pence and £10 to charity and up to 100 per cent in some cases.

Helen Davies, head of respect and responsibility at Orange UK, explained: "Text donating is a quick, easy and more direct channel for donors and we want to encourage more charities to use this as a powerful means for fundraising."

She added that Orange has already raised over £600,000 for Unicef's Haiti Earthquake Appeal and almost £2 million for the Comic Relief Red Nose Day in 2009, which both received 100 per cent of all donations.

Orange recently announced that its upcoming merger with T-Mobile will be named Everything Everywhere and will offer the largest network coverage in the UK.
