Mobile phone applications deemed an 'essential luxury'
Mobile phone applications featured in a top ten list of essential luxury items, after 13 per cent of consumers claimed they would not cut back this cost if their income were squeezed.
In the LV= survey, app purchases were put on a par with trips to the cinema in terms of importance, and beat out premium foods at home as well as gym memberships.
Those with Apple iOS handsets, like the iPhone 5, or owners of Android devices, such as the Samsung Galaxy S3, have access to over 700,000 tools on their respective application centres, the App Store and Google Play.
Phones running the latest Microsoft operating system, Windows Phone 8, can utilise the Windows Store, which currently has around 120,000 apps available for download.
Games are extremely popular, as the portability of mobile phones means killing a few minutes at the bus stop is easy and fun.
Productivity apps are also widely downloaded, significantly enhancing a gadget's capabilities. These include shopping, finance, reference and social networking tools.
