Mobile Device Segment Boosts Lacklustre Semiconductor Market

Shipments of mobile devices throughout the world have helped boost ailing semiconductor market results in 2011.

Revenue from chipsets for mobile devices increased by more than 20 per cent to $35 billion (£21.8 billion), while the semiconductor market showed just a two per cent year-on-year growth at the end of last year.

ABI Research's new study entitled Mobile Device Semiconductor Markets found that shipments of mobile phones, media tablets and e-book readers are growing fast, which helped keep the semiconductor market afloat.

This is highlighted by recent research released by UK research firm Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, which found that over 50 per cent of the British population owns a smartphone.

"It's tempting to describe this industry as lacklustre, but some segments of the semiconductor market are booming and vendors concentrating on the mobile device sector have delivered very healthy growth in 2011," practice director of semiconductors at ABI Research Peter Cooney commented.
