Mobile augmented reality apps to get 2.5bn downloads by 2017
A new report published by Juniper Research has found that by 2017, there will be over 2.5 billion mobile augmented reality apps downloaded to smartphones and tablets every year.
Augmented reality apps combine reality with digital overlay allowing instances where consumers are able to virtually try on items of clothing by using their mobile phones.
It is related to a more general concept called mediated reality in which a view of reality can be modified by a computer.
The 2.5 billion apps that will be downloaded per annum by 2017 represents 3.5 times the number of downloads achieved by Angry Birds in 2011.
Report author Charlotte Miller said familiarising the average consumer with the concept of augmented reality and what it can do for them is the first big step.
"We won't see an explosion in user numbers until major retail brands embrace and adopt augmented reality in their own apps," Ms Miller continued.
