Microsofts Steve Ballmer: Windows Phone 8 Sales Will Boom

Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer said that he expects Windows Phone 8 (WP8) operating system sales to "really ramp quickly".

The technology giant unveiled its new smartphone software at a San Francisco event on October 29th, following introduction of the PC version four days earlier.

Three mobile phone manufacturers have confirmed that they will utilise the new firmware, which competes with market leaders Apple iOS and Google Android.

Mr Ballmer is hoping that WP8 will help Microsoft to achieve a solid third place in the operating system market.

The latest Kantar Worldpanel ComTech data shows that Windows Phone has just 4.2 per cent share, behind BlackBerry creator Research in Motion (RIM) and the two dominant companies, in the UK.

Brits can now purchase high-end WP8 handsets, the HTC 8X and Nokia Lumia 920. Presumably cheaper and lower-spec devices, the HTC 8S and Lumia 820, should be available soon.

The Samsung smartphone using the Microsoft operating system will be called the Ativ S.
