Is the Motorola DROID for me?
Recycling a mobile phone and replacing it with a better model is a potentially cost-effective way to get the latest technology.
One model, the Motorola DROID - the first to come equipped with Google Maps Navigation - could be ideal for certain people.
But according to Mobile Gazette editor Conrad Longmore, it is not necessarily suitable for all.
"It is a large and very heavy phone," he explained. "Some customers will want an all-in-one device like the DROID, others will inevitably keep standalone [global positioning system] systems."
DROID was unveiled last month and is also the first smartphone to use the latest incarnation of Google's operating system - Android 2.0.
It also encompasses features such as Gmail and Exchange email.
The launch of the Motorola DROID follows new figures published last week by research company Gartner.
It reported smartphone sales of more than 41 million in the third quarter of this year - a 12.8 increase compared with the same time in 2008.
