iPhone and iPad contribute to increase in touch screen chip market
As a result of the runaway success of Apple's iPhone and iPad, shipments of touch screen displays could cause the market for such circuits to almost triple in size over a five-year span.
Forecasts have shown that the increase in sales of smart mobile phones and media tablets could see the market reach 2.4 billion units in 2015, which is up from 865 million in 2010.
According to an IHS iSuppli Display Electronics topical report, this year alone shipments will surge 28 per cent to 1.7 billion units.
This should come as no surprise as recent figures released by UK regulator Ofcom stated that over 50 per cent of people in the area now own a smartphone, such is the rise in popularity of the devices.
"Since the appearance of the iPhone, many other smartphone manufacturers have jumped on the bandwagon by deploying sophisticated touch sensors for their products,” principal analyst for display & consumer electronics at HIS Randy Lawson commented.
