Internet fans may have reason to trade in mobiles
Those who cannot bear to be away from an internet connection could find they are given a new reason to trade in a mobile phone and switch to a new device over the coming months.
New research from the Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA), compiled by analyst firm Informa, has found that Wi-Fi hotspots around the world are set to become significantly more plentiful.
Indeed, there is expected to be a 350 per cent rise in the number of internet points globally by 2015.
This means the current number of 1.3 million Wi-Fi hotspots will hit 5.8 million in just four years' time, giving handset owners far greater potential to enjoy high speeds and reliable connections.
Chris Bruce, chair of the WBA and chief executive officer at BT Openzone, said: "The findings show we are about to enter the golden age of public Wi-Fi with hotspot deployments set to soar."
Vodafone recently announced it is testing new technology in rural parts of the UK in a bid to improve mobile broadband coverage.
