Insurance may be wise investment when selling mobiles

08/04/2011

Britons who sell mobile phones and invest in brand new, top-of-the-range models as replacements may be wise to get them insured.

Research by uSwitch.com found some 35 million devices in the country have no cover – and with popular handsets such as the iPhone 4 worth over £600 this can be a costly mistake.

It noted that policies are widely available both with banks and mobile insurance providers.

Ernest Doku, technology expert at the website, said hi-tech smartphones are increasingly targeted by criminals as they can be sold on abroad for large sums of cash.

"Handsets [are] very expensive to replace, but the real sting in the tail is the astronomical phone bill you could receive if a thief uses your phone before you have had a chance to block it," he added.

Juniper Research this week announced a study that concluded mobile entertainment is set to become a greater priority for users over the coming years.
