HP Will Offer A Smartphone

Hewlett-Packard (HP) is working to bring a smartphone to market, the chief executive and president Meg Whitman revealed.

In an interview with Fox Business Network, the chief executive said that as a computing company, HP would have to offer a smartphone.

She said: "In many countries of the world that would be your first computing device."

The company already attempted to break into the mobile phone market back in 2010, when it bought-out Palm for $1.2 billion (£739 million).

It acquired Palm's webOS open-source operating system in the process, but the HP devices like the Pre, Pixi and Veer mobile phones and the TouchPad tablet that utilised it were all unsuccessful.

The new handset could use the webOS system, but HP may instead utilise connections with Microsoft to release a Windows phone.

Ms Whitman said: "We’ve got to get it right this time."

The chief executive is unlikely to follow in her predecessor's footsteps by buying out a failing mobile business.
