Google Underestimated Nexus Popularity

Google has reportedly halted new orders for its 16GB Nexus 7, after demand for the device outstripped supply.

The company had expected more customers to go for the 8GB version but the more memory-powerful handset has been flying off the shelves since it was released at the end of last month.

In the UK, Tesco is understood to have turned down a number of orders made online for the 16GB version after unprecedented demand, while it isn't currently selling the 8GB version, the Guardian reports.

The Nexus 7 marks Google's first foray into the tablet industry and it was made by Asus.

IHS iSuppli estimates that the 16GB version is also more profitable for Google as the less powerful device is being sold almost at cost.

Google has already placed a hold on the date for deliveries of the device once in order to allow Asus to ramp up production of more models, but it is believed that this will take some weeks.
