Google 'could spring a surprise' for mobile phone users
08/03/2010
Consumers should not bet against the search engine giant Google springing a handset that is as surprising and popular as the Apple iPhone, it has been suggested.
Google has recently launched its first handset - the Nexus One - which has been sold thus far exclusively through its website - but is set to be made more widely available in Europe thanks to a link up with Vodafone.
Stock Analysis service Trefis has suggested that in 2010 Google's Nexus One smartphone could achieve a 0.4 per cent share of the 1.3 billion unit global mobile phone market.
"Who knows with Google? They always have that ability to suddenly change direction and come up with a surprise like the iPhone," said editor of Mobile, James Atkinson.
He added that few people would have expected Apple to release a handset that achieved such success until they did so with the iPhone.
