Google Blocks Acer Mobile Phone With Alibaba OS

The launch of an Acer mobile phone featuring Alibaba's Aliyun operating system was cancelled, apparently due to pressure from Google.

Journalists were told on arrival at the event that it would no longer go ahead. The launch is apparently just postponed.

According to a statement released by Alibaba, Google had threatened Acer that it would cut existing links if it went ahead with the launch.

Google makes the Android operating system and Acer's website currently lists 14 mobile phones and three tablet computers which utilise the software.

The company is not just unhappy because the manufacturer wants to work with a competitor – Acer already has one handset which utilises rival Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 software.

Google claims that Alibaba created Aliyun by adapting the Android platform.

Also, as part of the agreement between the companies, Acer was also only supposed to manufacture devices which are Android-compatible.

However, Alibaba has responded: "Aliyun OS is not part of the Android ecosystem so of course Aliyun OS is not and does not have to be compatible with Android."
