EU Passes Microsoft Nokia Deal

Microsoft's buyout of Nokia's mobile phones and device division has been given the go-ahead by the European Union (EU).

A press release issued by the European Commission (EC) stated: "The Commission concluded that the transaction would not raise any competition concerns."

It felt that consumers wouldn't be affected because of the "modest overlap" that already exists between the two companies, referencing the fact that a lot of Nokia's Lumia devices carry Microsoft's Windows Phone operating system.

This is the second nod of approval that the Windows-giant has received after the US Department of Justice accepted the deal earlier this month.

The EC even brought Apple and Samsung into the debate, saying that it would allow the new partnership to compete with its bigger rivals.

"The overlap of [Microsoft and Nokia's] activities in this area is minimal and several strong rivals, such as Samsung and Apple, will continue to compete with the merged entity," added the European Commission.
