Delays to BlackBerry 10 smartphone as video chat added
The chief executive of Research in Motion (RIM) Thorsten Heins has explained the delays to the BlackBerry 10 operating system will be due to the addition of new features, including video chat.
It was confirmed by the smartphone maker last month the release of BlackBerry 10 will be delayed until next year as developers work to ensure the platform is ready.
Now, Mr Heins has confirmed one of the reasons for the interval will be the addition of video chat functionality to the devices, Computer World reports.
He told RIM's annual shareholders meeting: "BlackBerry Messenger is a very strong platform in Asia, Africa and Europe and we're upgrading it with video chat in BlackBerry 10."
It was recently confirmed by the company the first handsets using the operating system will not feature a physical keyboard, though Mr Heins did say gadgets with Qwerty inputs will follow at a later date.
The executive added the BlackBerry 10 system is "so unique and so special" and promised the firm will deliver high-quality touch screen devices running the platform in 2013.
