Consumers 'can save money on calls'
Mobile recycling could prove to be an option for users who would like to use Skype on their handset.
The service could save people money when making calls and mobile operator 3 has reported that the billionth minute of Skype calls on the network has been made.
Minister for digital Britain Stephen Timms used the free internet calling service to talk to the chief executive of medical aid charity Merling to discuss its work in Haiti.
More than £120 million in call costs has already been saved by customers and three million minutes of Skype calls take place every day on the network, reports 3.
Kevin Russell, 3's chief executive, said: "3 UK's network was purpose-built to bring the benefits of the internet to mobile users. With Skype on 3 users now making more than three million minutes a day of calls, we have taken this service mainstream."
He added that through a continual programme of expansion the operator is building the UK's "biggest and best" network for mobile data and that it anticipates the continued growth of Skype on 3.
Users of 3 phones were recently told they can use Twitter for free throughout February and March.
