Consumers Are Not Insuring Their Smartphones

Virgin Media has raised concerns that consumers are not insuring their mobile phones - particularly their expensive smartphones.

The firm claimed that new internet-ready handsets can cost up to £500 and so are well worth getting cover for.

And the residual value of cutting-edge handsets is also high, making mobile phone recycling a great option when new models are released.

Jamie Heywood, Virgin Media's director of mobile, said: "Clearly there's an opportunity for the mobile industry to transform consumer perception about the importance and value of mobile insurance."

He added that the lack of mobile phone customers taking out an insurance policy was "shocking".

The firm noted that 72 per cent of Brits have no mobile phone insurance, despite the fact that 70 per cent of those surveyed said they had lost or broken several handsets over the course of the past decade.

The consequences of a mobile phone theft can extend beyond the loss of the handset itself, with some victims also receiving huge phone bills after their device is taken.
