China to become largest smart mobile phone market
Over the next nine months China will become the dominant smart mobile phone market in the world, moving ahead of the current leader the US, forecasts have suggested.
The International Data Corporation's (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker suggested that by the end of the year, China will become the largest country-level market for the devices, while India and Brazil will join the top five by 2016.
This forecast regarding India is hardly surprising, as figures recently released from an Indian census showed that more people in the country have access to a mobile phone than a toilet.
Senior research analyst with the IDC's Mobile Phone Technology and Trends team Ramon Llamas said due to the sheer size of China, Brazil and India, they are quickly becoming the engines of the worldwide smartphone market.
"Users in emerging markets seek more than simple voice telephony, and smartphones offer the ideal platform for mobile entertainment, social networking, and business usage as seen in developed markets," he added.
