BlackBerry Loses Top Spot To Apple In Canada

Research In Motion (RIM) has been ousted from the top spot for smart mobile phone shipments in its home market of Canada for the first time.

Based in Ontario, RIM managed to ship 2.08 million BlackBerrys last year in the country, compared with 2.85 million units for Apple, according to data compiled by IDC and Bloomberg.

This represents a big fall from grace for the conglomerate, which managed to top the iPhone by half a million in 2010.

In 2008 it also managed to outsell Apple by almost five to one and shows how far the popularity of the ailing firm has dwindled in recent months, which has seen plenty of upheaval.

Fund manager at BMO Harris Private Banking in Toronto Paul Taylor said RIM losing in its home market is "strategically important".

"It does identify, even with a home-country bias, how consumers are responding to the greater functionality of the iPhone," he continued.
