BlackBerry launches BB7-sporting 9720
With BlackBerry reporting earlier this week that it is open to being bought out by other companies, many mobile phone firms would be concentrating on innovating and going forward. However, it appears that the Canadian manufacturer has other plans.
The company has launched the brand new BlackBerry 9720 but with the not so new BB7 operating system instead of its latest BB10 version. It's a peculiar decision as the older platform was at the head of BlackBerry when the firm started to fall seriously behind the competition.
It is planning to launch the handset in selected markets across Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America. The BlackBerry 9720 is also reminiscent of a time gone by for the company as it appears to have taken design tips from the Curve handsets. It brings the trademark QWERTY keyboard, 2.8-inch touchscreen, five-megapixel camera, video support and Wi-Fi.
This may be an attempt by the company to try and gain some much-needed revenue from the emerging markets, but it's still a strange choice to use a largely unpopular operating system to head its campaign.
