Archos unveils Android tablet

Archos has unveiled a new Android tablet aimed at users seeking an entry-level device that runs the Google operating system.

The Archos 97 Carbon is priced at $250 (£160) and features a 9.7-inch screen and version 4.0 of Android - also known as Ice Cream Sandwich, PCWorld reports.

It offers microSD and USB connectivity, but is powered by a single-core processor, unlike the dual and quad-core variants that are found in more high-end machines.

However, Archos' device has the advantage of a larger screen, as many low-end Android tablets, including Google's recently-announced Nexus 7, only feature seven-inch panels.

The tablet is due to launch this month and is slightly lighter - but also thicker - than the new iPad, which was introduced by Apple in March.

It is likely to supersede the Archos 70b Internet Tablet, a seven-inch tablet that was launched late last year for $200 that ran version 3.2 of the Android OS
