Apps 'to become a key reason to sell mobile phones'
Many people selling mobile phones over the next five years could do so in order to gain access to a superior pool of apps.
New figures from Berg Insight show that there is due to be an annual growth of 56.6 per cent in the apps market between 2010 and 2015, ending with a total of 98 billion apps being downloaded in a year.
The degree to which the industry is set to grow is illustrated by the fact that revenue in the sector was $1.6 billion (£1 billion) in 2010 and will rise to $8.8 billion by 2015.
However, despite predictions of the significant hike in takings, the group's senior analyst Johan Syanberg said: "Even though the download numbers will increase during the forecast period, most apps are free to download and app monetisation will be a challenge for developers."
He noted that in-app advertising is likely to become a common feature, as developers search for additional finance streams.
One of the industry's greatest providers of apps is Apple, which this week confirmed it is releasing a new iPhone 4S model.
