Apple iPhone creator 'has succeeded in the mobile market'
Apple's success in the mobile phone market has seen it go from being a computer equipment supplier to being the world's most profitable producer of handsets, it has been suggested.
The massive popularity of the iPhone may have led many people to sell old mobile handsets in order to experience the touch-sensitivity and gesture-based controls.
Now it has made Apple the highest profit-earner in the industry, based on figures from the third quarter of 2009 published by Strategy Analytics.
In all, the firm made $1.6 billion (£960 million) in profit during the three months, making it the most successful brand worldwide.
Strategy Analytics analyst Alex Spektor says: "With strong volumes, high wholesale prices and tight cost controls, the PC vendor has successfully broken into the mobile phone market in just two years."
Recent news from O2 may have made it even more tempting to sell old mobile phones and buy iPhones instead.
The mobile network revealed that it is offering home broadband services with the 3 GB Internet Tethering Bolt On available until December 31st as a tariff add-on.
