Apple Develops Mobile Phone That Can Flip On Its Back

Apple has developed technology that actually flips your mobile phone over when it's dropped to avoid damaging the screen.

Discovered yesterday (March 21st), the company filed a patent in 2011 for a "protective mechanism for an electronic device" with the US Patent and Trademark Office. The technology shifts the insides of a device to manipulate the way it falls, reducing the chance of damage.

Many iPhone users find themselves splashing out to repair the delicate glass screen but this invention could see the end of this. When the handset is dropped, the technology detects that the mobile phone is falling, and how fast, from position sensors, accelerometers and imaging sensors. A signal is sent to the processor and this initiates the patented technology and the weight inside the device lands on its least fragile area, reducing damage.

There are no signs that this could be in the next iPhone, or one anytime soon as it appears to be a complex invention but it does give a glimpse of what we can expect from the global smartphone company in the future.
